Timeline for Certification

From the application process to recertification of your credential, use this chart to guide your planning.

Plan Your Certification Journey How many weeks of study do you need? Is your employer offering a review course that you plan to take? Are you ready to test within 90 days of applying? Consider these questions and use these resources as you explore the process below. Varies by Candidate
Apply Online Complete the application using No Pass, No Pay charge code if your employer offers this benefit, or with payment if your employer does not. If you indicate an ADA need on your application, arrange for your Special Accommodations Form to be sent to PNCB. 15 Minutes
PNCB Review for Eligibility Approval Your complete application is reviewed for approval. If you are submitting a Special Accommodations Form, review begins after this documentation is received. Get real-time application status updates. As Received
PNCB Sends Scheduling Notification Watch for your email and postcard Approval & Scheduling Notice from PNCB. You are assigned a 90-day testing windowThe 90-day testing window is assigned by PNCB. It starts the day your complete application is approved. You must schedule your exam and test within this timeframe. You are notified promptly by email and postcard when the window starts. If you do not schedule or test in this timeframe, you forfeit fees. and are ready to schedule your exam with Prometric. Download your official eligibility letter with scheduling instructions at My Documents. Within 2 Weeks after Eligibility Approval
Schedule Your Exam Testing center seats can fill quickly. Schedule your test with Prometric now, even if your scheduled date to test will be later in your 90-day window. You have 90 days to test. Within 2 Weeks of Notification
Take Your Exam Honor your test appointment so you don't forfeit fees or miss out on one of your two uses of a No Pass, No Pay code. Arrive 30 minutes early with proper IDs. You will receive pass/fail status information prior to leaving the test center. Within 90 Days
PNCB Mails Official Results You receive official exam results by mail. Passing candidates also receive a lapel pin, wall certificate, and information on staying certified. 2-3 Weeks
Plan Recertification Learn how to stay CPN certified. You will need 15 contact hours of accredited CE or accepted equivalents. Pediatric direct care work hours can count too. Seek out continuing education opportunities so you can use them to recertify. Log completed activities at My ReCErt Tracker to pre-load them for recertification. Within 6 months and ongoing
