PNCB Continuing Competence Summit

When a certified nursing professional renews their credential, what does that mean for the nurse, the profession, and health care consumers? What emerging methods to document competence should certification boards consider for the future? Is your organization moving in the same direction we are exploring?

Industry leaders and stakeholders attended and gave feedback on a multi-year research project undertaken by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board to answer the above questions and many others. PNCB is the leading organization for pediatric nursing professionals, with more than 50,000 registered nurses and advanced practice nurses actively holding one of four specialized credentials. PNCB-certified nurses take care of some of the most vulnerable patients. 
  
Through our Continuing Competence Initiative, we engaged nurses, employers, the public, and industry leaders. These stakeholders responded with robust feedback about PNCB's current certification renewal process—and new possibilities. Our unique methodology incorporated ethnographic interviews throughout the health care landscape to understand the culture of competence. We also fielded multiple surveys, analyzed competency models throughout the U.S., and validated conceptual constructs with the aim of making recertification more meaningful for all involved.
