These are just a few of the ways leaders in the specialized field of pediatric
nursing have described our rigorous certification programs. We remain the largest independent pediatric nursing certification
organization in the country.
More than 95% of all pediatric nursing professionals who certify choose the PNCB.
And they stay certified... 98% of all PNCB-certified nurses recertified for 2015.
Our story begins in 1975 when we were established to develop a certification program for Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Two years later we launched the Primary Care Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP®) Exam, which continues to be the certification exam of choice for graduating PNPs. Since 1977, more than 12,000 PNPs have earned the designation Primary Care CPNP®.
In 1989, we responded to a nationwide survey of pediatric nurses who indicated a need and desire to participate in certification by launching the Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN®) Exam. We offer an innovative "No Pass, No Pay" Program to support hospitals' efforts to promote CPN® certification.
In 2005, after careful role delineation research, we became the only certification board to offer Acute Care Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP®) Certification.
In 2009, we launched the Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse Exam with the Board of Certification for Emergency Nurses (BCEN) and celebrate over 20 years of administering our CPN® Exam.
In 2011, we launched the Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Specialist Certification Exam to improve access to care for children and adolescents experiencing behavioral and mental health concerns. Primary care advanced practice nurses can now be recognized for their added expertise in this area with a national credential.
As we look to the future, you can be assured that we will continue to maintain the high quality of our current programs. Your needs—and those of your patients—are always foremost in our thoughts as we manage the present and look to the future because at the PNCB, we make it our mission to provide the highest quality certification services for nursing professionals who care for pediatric populations.
