We hope you enjoy this new electronic newsletter created exclusively for you and your fellow Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioners! Our first issue takes you behind the scenes with Pharmacology and Acute Care SAE committee members, plus shares a letter from PNCB Board President Madelyn McMurtrie and a Recert update with our CEO, Dr. Jan Wyatt. What's in our next issue? That's up to you... Simply email us with your ideas and we'll do our best to deliver.
Getting to Know Your Board
Did you know that the PNCB Board of Directors is a "practicing" board?
The majority of our members are PNCB-certified nursing professionals and, as your colleagues,
we always have your best interests at heart as we look for new ways to improve what we do here at the PNCB.
Your board members are responsible for creating policies that directly affect you, like the elimination of
enrollment fees for each seven-year cycle.
Who is "on board" at the PNCB? We've grown from six members to a total of ten, and seven of us hold
CPNP-PC®, CPNP-AC®
or CPN® certification. Of the remaining three, two are pediatricians who work closely
with PNPs and pediatric nurses in their practices. A final "consumer" member is involved to reflect on
the quality of the work we do and to be alert to issues relating to quality pediatric nursing practice.
We're pleased that the administration of our acclaimed Primary Care CPNP® Exam celebrated its thirtieth
anniversary this year, and we want you to know that your board is dedicated to updating this and all other
PNCB exams often so that they remain respected, reliable measures of a nurse's knowledge and skills.
By keeping our focus on developing the highest quality exams possible, we ensure that your PNCB certification
is valued by your colleagues, employers, and the public not only today, but for many, many years to come.
Our commitment to you is always foremost on our minds. If you have questions for us, we'd love to hear from you.
Please feel free to contact us at pncb@pncb.org any time.
What's New with Recert?
A lot has changed in the world of nursing since
my mom took this photo of a future nurse. Every year, the PNCB looks for ways to change as well.
We hope you enjoy what's in store for 2008 Recertification:
No more enrollment fee. As announced in our August certificate mailing,
this administration fee for starting the first year in a seven-year Recert cycle is no more!
Online wallet cards. Faster access to this document was foremost in our thoughts
as we revamped Recertification this year. And if you misplace your card, you can quickly print a
replacement.
Streamlined Recert. Nurses are busy people. We've made online Recert faster than ever this year.
A bigger online discount. You'll save $10.00 with online Recert, and we encourage you to take advantage of this
savings October 1 through December 1, 2007. Of course if you'd like to complete paper forms, these will be available on our
web site for printing.
We hope you enjoy how easy this year's Recert process is. If you have questions, we're just a phone call away!
The Pharm SAE: More Than Just a Recert Option
Once during a seven-year cycle, every Primary Care and dually-certified CPNP® (Acute Care and Primary Care certified) will complete the Pharm Self-Assessment Exercise. Acute Care CPNPs® may also choose this SAE as a Recert option. Developing each SAE requires our committees to take a unique approach, and the Pharm SAE is no different. To explore the particular challenges and rewards of this Recertification option, we've asked two long-time committee members, Pat Clinton and Teri Moser Woo, to reflect on their work for this SAE. Introducing the Acute Care SAEs!
If you're an Acute Care or dually-certified CPNP® (Acute Care and Primary Care certified), you probably knew this Recertification option
was on the horizon. Our AC SAE committee members have been working hard behind the scenes to
take the AC SAE from concept to reality. And you'll have a choice... The Acute Care Cardiology SAE will cover
information on cardiac surgery, congenital heart defects, and other acute care focused cardiac
problems in children. The Acute Care Respiratory SAE will include acute pulmonary problems along with ventilation issues.
In the future, we'll offer these SAEs as continuing education activities. This means that Primary Care CPNPs® can earn contact hours
for their participation while learning more about systems-focused acute care issues.

The PNCB needs your help!
We want to feature real Primary Care and Acute Care CPNPs® on our website...
Stock photos helped us get the revamped PNCB website started, but it's time for us
to begin showcasing the "real deal" at the top of each web page. Wear your lab coats or scrubs—and of course
your smiles!—in solo shots or groups of two or three. Plain white backgrounds work best, if possible,
and we'd love it if your wear your CPNP® lapel pin. Email Lori Boocks at lboocks@pncb.org
with your photos and any questions.

We're proud to announce the names of our 2006 "Outstanding Performance" award recipients for our Primary Care
and Acute Care CPNP® Exams. Congratulations to Tammy Robertson of Plano,
Texas who received the award for her performance on the Acute Care Exam. For our Primary Care Exam, three exam
candidates qualified to receive this top honor: Jennifer Grabowski of Apex, North Carolina, Heather Meador
(pictured bottom) of Summerville, South Carolina, and Valerie Stanley (pictured top) of Clifton Park, New York.
These CPNPs® were honored at the 2007 NAPNAP Conference in Orlando this spring. Congratulations to all!
Did you recently win an award or have your work published? Share your kudos with us so
we can tell your fellow CPNPs® all
about it in our next issue.
Over 97% of all CPNPs® recertified for 2007!
CPNPs® are
worldwide, living in Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Germany, Korea, Spain, France, Great Britain, Norway and Puerto Rico.
We hope you enjoyed this inaugural issue of CPNP® Perspectives.
Look for the next edition to arrive in your inbox this December!
