Free CE Round-Up

Now is a great time to review what CE you've earned before Recert enrollment, October 1, 2009 through February 1, 2010. If you're searching for free sources for contact hours, Medscape and Nursing Spectrum offer a variety of CE that can be used for your Recertification. You will need to register at the sites to participate.

What kind of CE can be used for Recert? Content areas relevant to pediatric nursing or professional growth and development in nursing can be used toward your CPN® Recert. Academic credit can also be used as a CE documentation strategy, and clinical hours can be combined with CE if you'd like. See the CPN® Recert Options webpage for links to full details about options.

When do I need to earn the CE to apply it to Recert? Academic credit or contact hours must be earned within 24 months of submission of Recert enrollment.

If you have questions any time of the year about Recertification, visit www.pncb.org or email recert@pncb.org for assistance.

Certification Advocate Award Winners

The PNCB is pleased to announce the recipients of the first annual Certified Pediatric Nurse - CPN® Certification Advocate Award! Congratulations to both Donna Timmerman, BSN, RN, CPN, a Clinical Educator at Children's Hospital of Orange County, and Casey O'Brien, BSN, RN, CPN, a Clinical Education Coordinator at Children's Memorial Hospital of Chicago, for going above and beyond to encourage RNs at their facilities to seek certification. The PNCB presented the winners with their awards during the 2009 Society of Pediatric Nurses Conference Awards Luncheon in Atlanta, Georgia.

Donna L. Timmerman, BSN, RN, CPN lives in Westminster, California and has been a pediatric nurse for more than 16 years. She earned her BSN from California State University at Long Beach. Donna is currently the Clinical Educator for Medical-Surgical and Short Stay Units at the Children's Hospital of Orange County, where she has been instrumental in increasing the percentage of certified nurses from 6% to more than 50% in less than 3 years. Donna was recognized as the RN Residency Program Champion of 2007 at the Children's Hospital of Orange County. Because of her expertise, she was invited to participate as a panel member in a discussion on the role of the professional nurse, involvement in professional organizations, and the benefits of membership for the new RN resident at the 2009 SPN Conference.

Casey O'Brien, BSN, RN, CPN is originally from Rochester, Minnesota. She graduated with her BSN from Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in 2002. She is currently working towards her MSN in Nursing Education at The University of Iowa. Casey lives in Chicago, Illinois where she works at Children's Memorial Hospital as a clinical educator. Since 2007, Casey has facilitated a program that has provided almost 150 nurses with the opportunity to become Certified Pediatric Nurses.

Congratulations to you both! The CPN® Certification Advocate Award is presented annually to a Certified Pediatric Nurse who demonstrates an impressive commitment to encouraging and supporting certification. The PNCB commends all 2009 nominees for their efforts.

Information about the 2010 awards will be posted at www.pncb.org this fall, and we encourage all eligible certificants to apply.
