Every four years, the CPEN will need
to renew or recertify to keep his or her
certification active.
The PNCB and BCEN believe that your
continued growth in the field of pediatric
emergency nursing is critical to providing
high-quality health care to your patients.
1. CPENs will need to document
professional development activities equivalent to 100 contact hours earned over a period of four years.
2. All contact hours should be related
to urgent or emergent nursing care for pediatric patients and families.
3. All contact hours submitted for CPEN
recertification must have been earned
during the past 48 months.
4. Contact hours may be earned through
continuing education (attendance and teaching), self assessment exam, re-examination or academic (credit)
education.
5. A clinical practice option could
be combined with a contact-hour
requirement. Nursing practice includes providing direct care, health care
facilitation, education and advocacy
for patients and families with urgent-
care or emergent-care needs.
Over 500 RNs have earned CPEN status since this exam's launch in January 2009.
