CPN® Recertification

Your CPN® Recert Activity Options

Each year, you will select one option to complete your Recertification. Several options are available.

Your CPN® Recertification Program is managed in 7-year cycles. One year during this cycle, the PNCB's Pediatric Nursing Self-Assessment Exercise (SAE) is required. For the remaining six years of your cycle, you may select documentation options. The chart below lists your possible choices and links to each option so you can learn more.

You decide when to do each option. Your SAE doesn't need to be taken during a particular year... just be sure you complete one within your 7-year cycle. This self-paced learning activity can be taken more than once in a 7-year cycle—a new edition of this acclaimed SAE is published every other year.

CPN® Recertification Options for Your 7-Year Cycle
• Required once every 7 years: Pediatric Nursing SAE
Documentation of 10 Contact Hours or 1 Academic Credit
Documentation of 5 Contact Hours and 200 Clinical Practice Hours
Inactive*

* The Inactive option is not recommended but is included as a choice should you be faced with unusual circumstances that prevent you from completing an activity. Only 1 year of inactivity is allowed within each 7-year cycle. More than 1 year of inactivity within a 7-year cycle will require you to forfeit previous participation and you'll need to take the exam again to regain certification. Please note: You may take an inactive option only as a substitute for CE-related documentation options. Please be aware that to maintain certification you will need to complete any required SAEs within each 7-year cycle.
