For an in-depth look at the goals and development of the Acute Care SAES, check out our interview, The New Acute Care SAEs, with AC SAE committee members Andrea Kline of Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago and Lisa Keeler of Children's Hospital Boston.
If you are an Acute Care CPNP® or a Dually-certified CPNP®, then you must take two Acute Care SAEs in a
7-year cycle. Acute Care CPNPs® will need to take a third SAE in the 7-year cycle, either a third Acute Care SAE or the Primary Care or the Pharmacology SAE.
If you hold only Primary Care certification, an Acute Care SAE is not a Recert option. Soon we will offer the Acute Care SAEs for continuing education.
Primary Care CPNPs could use the contact hours earned through this activity as a Contact Hour Documentation option for future Recertification.
Can I take both Acute Care SAEs now and have them count for two years of Recert? Our Recert enrollment process can only track one activity per enrollment period, so unfortunately not.

We hope you enjoy this innovative way to complete Acute Care SAE requirements!
Q: Will I receive the questions or are they only displayed on the computer screen?
A: A PDF of your SAE's questions will be emailed to you. This PDF will be attached to the instructional email. You will also see your questions online as you move through the SAE.
Q: Do I have multiple times to return to the online SAE and answer, or do I have to enter all answers at one time? Will I be able to be interrupted and return to it?
A: As long as you do not score your SAE, you will have unlimited access to your answer sheet through 11:59 p.m. EST on 5/15/2010.
Q: After I enter an answer, can I return to the questions and change it before the SAE is scored?
A: Yes, you can enter your answers and change these as many times as necessary... as long as you do not grade the question. You can not change the answer on a question that has been graded.
Q: Are there time parameters?
A: There are no time parameters. Just be sure to complete your SAE online by 11:59 p.m. EST on May 15, 2010. If you leave the website untouched for 20 minutes, however, the SAE website will time out.
Q: Should I record my answers in writing somewhere?
A: It's always a good idea to record your responses. If you print a copy of the SAE questions, simply note your answers there for your reference.
Plans are underway to develop the following system-specific SAEs:
If you currently practice in one of these areas, we invite you to apply to become an external item writer. See our Get Involved page for details on how to volunteer.
We offer an SAE Updates web page to address issues concerning test items. You can visit this webpage to see if your question is discussed there. If not, please email us at sae@pncb.org for assistance.
Item writers and Test Committee members are volunteers of the PNCB. There are no conflicts of interest to report. Conflict of Interest forms for SAE contributors can be accessed through the PNCB offices. List of current SAE contributors.
PNCB-certified nursing professionals work in a variety of roles and settings all over the United States and beyond.
